Philadelphia Soul to return in 2011
By Keith Pompey

Inquirer Staff Writer

The Philadelphia Soul are back, but Jon Bon Jovi isn't.

After a two-year hiatus, the franchise will return to the Arena Football League next season. But it will do so without high-profile owner Bon Jovi, who is focusing on his worldwide musical tour.

New owners Cosmo DeNicola and Pete Ciarrocchi will join Craig Spencer and former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski, members of the original ownership group. Ciarrocchi is the owner of the sports bar Chickie's and Pete's. DeNicola is the former owner of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton AF2 franchise.

"We are bringing back to our incredible fans the most exciting, fan-friendly, and affordable brand of football in America," Jaworski said. "My partners and I are committed to putting together a championship team for this great city to be proud of."

The Soul won the ArenaBowl XXII championship in 2008. Shortly afterward, the league canceled its 2009 season because teams were losing an average of $1.5 million a season. A new version of the AFL began in April with 15 teams.

League commissioner Jerry Kurz announced in February that there were serious negotiations to bring teams to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Denver, and Southern California in 2011. The Soul's return became official Tuesday.

According to a source, the league also will announce the return of the Kansas City and San Jose franchises this weekend.

"We are thrilled to reward our fans with the return of a stronger, fiscally stable Philadelphia Soul franchise," Spencer said. "While we shared the frustration of every fan when the league shut down, we also believed it was essential for the sport's long-term success."

Bon Jovi had been the face of the franchise since it joined the AFL as an expansion team in 2004. At the time, the league hoped that high-profile people such as Bon Jovi and NFL Hall of Famer John Elway, who owned the Colorado Rush, would lure fans in.

The Soul expect to name a head coach in two to three weeks. Former Soul coach Bret Munsey is the director of player personnel and defensive backs coach for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. The Tuskers are based in Munsey's hometown of Orlando, giving him the opportunity to spend more time with his family.

Jaworski helps bring Soul back to Philly
By DAN GELSTON • Associated Press • June 16, 2010

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Soul are set for an encore in the AFL.

This time, they'll be back without their headline act.

The former league champions are returning to the Arena Football League for the 2011 season without their famous former co-owner, Jon Bon Jovi.

Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski and businessman Craig Spencer are the new majority owners.

"To a certain extent, we never left," Spencer said. "We always wanted to continue and play Arena Football."

The Soul shut down after beating the San Jose SaberCats 59-56 to win the ArenaBowl championship in 2008.

The AFL canceled its season in 2009 after a 22-year run and returned this year with 15 teams under new leadership and economic model. The season runs from April to July.

"The AFL is pleased to welcome the Philadelphia Soul back to the Arena Football family," commissioner Jerry Kurz said. "The passionate fans of Philadelphia and the surrounding area as well as the tremendous ownership group epitomize Arena Football and the league's continued commitment to the communities we serve."

Jaworski was team president in the Soul's first incarnation. Pete Ciarrocchi, owner of Chickie's and Pete's, and Cosmo DeNicola are also part of the new ownership group.

Spencer said a salary cap with nonnegotiable, slotted salaries will help ease some of the financial burden that ended the original AFL. He said all players have one-year contracts, meaning the Soul will have their pick of free agents at the end of the season. There is no "expansion" draft.

Spencer said he hopes to have a coach soon, possibly by the end of the month.

The Soul will play their home games at the Wachovia Center.

Spencer said the owners had the option of starting this season but decided to spend more time building toward next year.

"We knew it would come back, we were just waiting to see in what form in what come back," Spencer said. "It crushed us to leave, but the league was on a path to self destruction."

The Soul debuted in the 2004 season backed by Bon Jovi's considerable star power. He wore a Soul jersey at packed concerts and was involved in local and national promotional work for the team. Bon Jovi was considerably more well known than anyone on the Soul, and became a local philanthropist.

The Soul won their first nine games and the Eastern Division title in 2008 before going on to win the championship with Bon Jovi in attendance. This year he delivered on a promise of a free concert in Philadelphia for Soul fans to celebrate the title.

"I will not be part of the ownership group due to my focus and attention being on the current Bon Jovi worldwide tour, but I have fond memories of my experience with the Soul and especially our 2008 ArenaBowl championship season," Bon Jovi said. "I continue to be a fan of the team and want nothing but continued success on and off the field."

The Soul were a hit in Philadelphia and found their niche among the four major pro sports teams. The Soul drew 131,817 fans for an average of 16,477 and sold out four of their eight home games in 2008.

Ex-champion Philadelphia Soul returning to Arena Football League
Jun 15, 2010

The Philadelphia Soul, who disbanded when the AFL shut down operations in 2009, will return to indoor football in 2011. They will play in their former home at the Wachovia Center.

ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Ron Jaworski is again part of the ownership group that has resuscitated the Soul.

"We are bringing back to our incredible fans the most exciting, fan-friendly and affordable brand of football in America," Jaworski said in a statement. "My partners and I are committed to putting together a championship team for this great city to be proud of."

The AFL was reconstituted in 2010 after Arena Football One purchased the assets of the old league out of bankruptcy court. The Soul were not among the teams that initially returned, although they had won the most recent AFL championship.

The new Soul franchise has an ownership group that includes Jaworski, Craig Spencer, Pete Ciarrocchi and Cosmo DeNicola. Missing is singer-songwriter Jon Bon Jovi, a mouthpiece for the former club.

Bovi Jovi said he will be a supporter of the new group, however. "I have fond memories of my experience with the Soul and especially our 2008 ArenaBowl championship season," he said in a statement.

"I continue to be a fan of the team and want nothing but continued success on and off the field for the Soul."

Let just hope that the Soul can sign some good people through free agency.

I want to sit front row 200 level again. Sadly a few months after the Soul won the Arena bowl we lost my co-season ticket holder.(My father)

It will be really special to go back, and sad without him.

As long as they have cheap season tickets for the 200 level I'm there. I suspect their database for Season ticket holders is long gone.

Also they may make it cheaper since both Tampa & Orlando can only fill their games 50%. They were the best at sell-outs before 2009.

I've NEVER missed a home opener in team history, even if I can't afford season tickets in 2011, I will STILL BE AT THE 1st HOME GAME BACK! Hope they have a ring ceremony for the 2008 squad.

SoulPhan71, good to have you back. Sorry to hear about your dad.

There are a couple of things I can answer for you;

1 - I'm about 99.9999999% sure they did not lose their database. How else did they email us that they were back? And B) That's where their money is
2 - If what I have read on the message boards is true, there will be no ring ceremony for one simple reason. The players already received their rings. When they knew they were not participating in 2010, they sent the rings out.

The Team has never e-mailed me about 2011. I read it in the June 16th USA Today.

They you guys e-mailed me a few days later.

I figured as much about the rings. Still the fans never had a Home Opener as the defending Champs.

They should bring the guys not playing back at least for the 1st game.

And thanks, my Father had turned just 59 five weeks before he passed. He was soooo passionate about the Soul winning the Arena Bowl.

No it's Spike Rogan. SoulPhan71 was my Screen name on the chat for Fran's AFL Weekly show.

BTW I would love to do a Soul Weekly Internet show. I filled in on Sports Overnight America for a few months.

I have to see what I would need to make that happen.
