Pioneers Clinch East Division with Win

Central Valley looks to snap Wilkes-Barre/Scranton winning streak at 23 games

(Wilkes-Barre, PA) The Pioneers take the field at the Wachovia Arena this Saturday night for the first time since a May 30th victory over Tennessee Valley as they look to lock up a third straight East Division Championship. Standing in their way is the Central Valley Coyotes, traveling across the country from Fresno, California looking to end the Pioneers regular season home winning streak at 23 games and snap a five game losing streak of their own. Central Valley, although just 3-8, boasts one of the leagues stingiest pass defenses, allowing just 226 yards passing per game (3rd in af2). Pioneer s veteran quarterback Ryan Vena will look return to his early season form as he attempts to lead his team to their third consecutive division title and one step closer to locking up home field advantage throughout the American Conference playoffs.

Vena was off to another great start this season, averaging 271 yards passing and 6 touchdowns per game through the first 7 games of the season. Since then, he has thrown almost 50 less yards per game and his touchdown total has dropped to under 4 per game. To Ryan’s credit, the Pioneers last 4 opponents all rank in the top 10 defenses in the af2 in points allowed per game (Tennessee Valley – 2; Tulsa – 5; Green Bay – 7; Manchester – 9). Despite a strong pass defense, Central Valley’s defense ranks 19th of 25 teams in points allowed per game with 59. They will need to be on top of their game to hold the Pioneers high powered offense under that mark.
